O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement about her performance. O'Neil was given high marks from panel of judges. However, she suffered significant defeats during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, followed by the bottom two. The judges were stunned by this and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performances. Her performance on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
